THE STONE OF LIGHT | ||||||||||
In 1977 I sent three sons and a son-in-law to the copper deposits that we had in the Ashburton Ranges, to collect a particular stone that was there and bring it back to the Principality.
After
their departure early in the morning, I was in my office at my desk where I
scribbled on a piece of paper: They arrived at the mines on the second day, set up camp and then went to the mine deposits of “Bali High” where the stone was located. As Prince Ian had been there before, he knew where the stone was. Once at the deposit there were no trees or bushes to be seen, just rock and shale. The stone could not be found. After some time searching, it was decided to retire to the camp site for the night. Later that night as they lay out in the open, with full view of the sky, they all noticed strange lights traversing the sky, and when one of these lights approached a star it appeared to arc around the star. This occurrence bewildered them all and indeed frightened one of them. In the morning, after breakfast, they again went to the deposits of Bali High, and on arrival, there was the great big stone which they could not see the previous day, the second day of the expedition, but they could see it that day, the third day. The stone was too large for them to handle so they had to break pieces off of it and load them onto their trailer. After completing this hard work they packed up and left the campsite to begin the journey back to the Principality. About 2 miles down the track they came to a large pool in the Ashburton River named Koonong Pool. Here, as it was a very hot day they were able to enjoy a swim whilst one of them decided to do some filming with his 8mm movie camera. Suddenly all the birds and the cattle around pool enjoying a cool drink began to make a lot of noise, the fish began to jump out of the water, then there was a great noise from the direction of where they had collected the stone pieces, the ground around them shook and waves occurred on the water in the pool. They all quickly gathered their things together and departed in quite a hurry. A few days later back in the Principality, Prince Ian, when in my office happened to see on my desk the note that I had scribbled after they departed. He then went to his mother, Princess Shirley, and in his bewilderment asked her, “Why did Dad write that note? We in fact could not find that stone until the third day.” Princess Shirley was unaware of the note and could offer no explanation of it to Prince Ian.
Some
year later I suggested to my sons that they build a brick cairn, on top of
it placing various mineral stones that we had and put the stones from the
Bali High mine on top, which they then did. Some period later I decided
that the stone was worthy of a name, and due to the circumstances of
acquiring it, I considered that naming it something in relation to nature
would be fitting, so I named it:
As
part of the 45th Anniversary Celebrations I have had the cairn, which is
topped by the "Stone of Light" incorporated into: In evaluating this stone I find the following to be of interest:
“The Stone of Light” = 183 (183 ÷ 91 = 2.010989…)
