In the sport of Wife Carrying SONKAJARVI, FINLAND is where the sport was invented
and the  world championships have been held there each year around the month of June since 1992.

Basic Rules of the sport!

  1. The length of the official track is 253.5 metres.
Its surface is made up of sand, grass and asphalt.

  2. The track has two dry obstacles and one water obstacle,
    about a metre deep.

  3. The wife to be carried may be your own, the neighbour's or one you may just wish for?;
she must, however, be over 17 years of age.

  4. The minimum weight of the wife to be carried is 49 kilos.  If she weighs less she will
be burdened with a heavy rucksack in order she reaches the desired minimum weight.
    There is no maximum weight!

  5. The winner is the couple who completes the course in the shortest time.

  6. If a contestant drops the wife, he has to lift her back onto his back
or in his arms and continue carrying.

  7. The only equipment allowed is a belt worn by the carrier.

  8. The contestants run the race two at a time, so each heat is a contest in itself.

  9. Each contestant takes care of his/her safety and, if deemed necessary, insurance.

  10. The contestants have to pay attention to the instructions given by the organisers of the competition.

Along with the wife carrying world championships there is also a team competition.
The track is the same but three men in the team carry the wife in turns.
At the exchange point the carrier has to drink the official “wife carrying drink”
continuing the race.

We at PHR are proud to have Julia representing us and will certainly be reporting on her exploits!
