Bringing home Gold for the Principality of Hutt River

The RHR Silvertails were resplendent in new season kit in their Cyclo Sportif “come back” for 2014.
Opting for a pre-Dams training ride format (i.e. leisurely paced) the RHR Silvertails entered the 'A distance',
being 80km over challenging hilly terrain.

Pace setting was provided by the usual hard men Dave “Dapper” Hutson and Andrew “Macca” McMillan with support from Team Captain Simon Carroll and Andy Fethers. Mid-markers John Barrington and Marshall Allen were thankful for the anchor thrown out the back early by T. Graeme Wright keeping the average pace down to a manageable level.

Near the 60km mark however Graeme was overwhelmed by the level of “support” shown by his team mates. Having pulled in the anchor, offers of encouragement were made to the next weakest link Marshall Allen. Words were exchanged along the lines of “I greatly appreciate your encouragement and offers of support but I prefer to experience the joys of the event in my own way – so ….”.

With hierarchical issues resolved the remaining 6 settled into the final climbs to the finish line. A brief chain scare for JB was averted on at 10% gradient (“sorry JB I can’t stop and help or I will be walking home”).

A final time of 3:01:14 at an average speed of 26.4km placed the Riyal Hutt River Silvertails in 14^th position
(of 35 A Distance starters).
